The Winter Olympics have seen their fair share of comeback stories. U.S. men’s figure skater Nathan Chen is now experiencing one of those legendary moments.
In PyeongChang, he placed fourth in the team event’s short program. His disappointment continued when he placed 17th in the singles competition’s short program.
Determined to execute with precision, Chen commanded the ice with authority. He was dressed in a black tuxedo-style jacket with a white t-shirt underneath, accompanied by a white handkerchief in his jacket pocket.
Chen chose to perform to ‘La Bohème, a French-language song. The lyrics center on a painter recalling his younger years when he was hungry but happy. The music matched Chen’s moves wonderfully and provided an emotional lift.
At 22 years old, Nathan set a world record, scoring 113.97 in the short program. The record-breaking routine included impressive moves like a triple axel, a quad lutz-triple toe loop combo, and even a quad flip.
His new world record beats the previous one set by Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, who won the gold medal twice. The commentators marveled at Chen’s recent dominance in the sport of figure skating.
Nathan Chen made America and his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah very proud. His efforts helped the U.S. team bring home the silver medal. An impressive performance that will secure his place in men’s figure skating history.
