Vicky has been living in progressively smaller spaces for a decade. She started in an 1800-square-foot home before moving to a 650-square-foot cottage, to a 450-square-foot cottage, and finally to Lala Land, the 200-square-foot tiny home she lives in now.
Lala Land is only eight and a half feet wide, but Vicky designed her home to have a lot of storage. The final build has room for everything she and her dog, Jasper, need to thrive.
Though there is enough space to host guests inside, the pandemic has caused most socialization to take place outside. Her enclosed deck has a full-size table and great views of the surrounding Tennessee scenery. She emphasizes how important a large outdoor space is for tiny inside living.
Cooking is one of Vicky’s passions, and her tiny home’s kitchen shows it! She cooks full meals with her convection oven and can store leftovers in her full-size refrigerator. A full-size farmhouse sink has plenty of room to wash her handmade dishes and glasses.
Her loft has a full-size bed, room for her dog’s bed, and a custom shelf that fits her many pairs of hiking and running shoes. If she were to build another tiny home, Vicky would forgo the loft because changing the sheets is challenging at her age.
Vicky is realistic about tiny living and speaks openly about what she has learned over the last decade. She discusses humidity issues, slow laundry, and how she misses having a full-size closet.
Regardless, the sense of freedom that comes with only being responsible for her tiny house and limited belongings makes it all worth it to her. She is even expanding the place to add a full-size guest room for visiting family and friends to experience tiny living with her.
