Mary Alexander, a 92-year-old Inverness woman, lived with her 9-year-old Chihuahua, Sassy. They have been very close ever since the senior lady had rescued the tiny pup from the shelter. They have been best friends and loved to spend time with one another.
Recently, Mary walked out with her pet dog as she wanted to check the mailbox outside her Inverness home. However, the senior woman forgot to take her cellphone; after all, it would be a quick trip.
However, that was when the unexpected happened. When Mary stepped up on the walkway, her foot twisted and fell backward. Mary was on the ground with a fence surrounding her property.
No one could see her as the fence surrounding her house had a lot of shrubs. Mary told one of the interviewers, “I just said prayers.” Perhaps, God had Sassy answer them because the dog sprang into action.
Mary remembered that Sassy ran down to every car that passed by as she lay in the sun. Sassy did this for 5 hours. After that, she came up to her owner every now and then and licked her face. The Chihuahua’s perseverance finally paid off.
A couple, who was passing by, heard the nonstop barking of the helpless dog and spotted Mary. The poor woman was able to inch her way to a somewhat shady area but unfortunately came to rest on an ant pile.
She got ant bites and bruised ribs and was severely dehydrated. Mary had to be hospitalized. The senior woman credited Sassy for saving her life and called it a return favor. Mary told the interviewer, “I saved her at the shelter, and she saved me.”
