"Howl of a Dog" rescue volunteers met Remy during a dog spay-neuter campaign that they had organized in a rural area in Romania. The gentle and friendly dog lived on the sidewalk in front of the grocery store.
The kind lady of the store made sure that she fed the dog every day. When the volunteers visited the village, Remy would greet them each morning. The dog was burnt on his nose with a red-hot iron, leaving a permanent scar.
Sadly, in many villages in Romania, people believe that burning a dog's nose with a hot iron can build up their immune system and treat distemper. It was a cruel practice with no proven medical benefits. It even added more pain to an animal who was already suffering.
The kind volunteers even noticed that the tip of the dog's left ear was also torn off. Remy made sure that he met the kind people every single morning and welcomed them with his innocent smile and a tail that never stopped wagging.
Remy was also neutered during the spay/neuter campaign. A dog so friendly, loving, and intelligent should be adopted in no time. Unfortunately, in rural areas, dogs are most of the time seen just as "tools" used for protecting and guarding livestock or hunting. Friendly dogs like Remy, who can't perform those activities, are considered "no use."
The volunteers tried to find out more about Remy, but no one in the village knew about the dog. However, considering the scar on his nose, it was very likely that the dog did have an owner, but he was abandoned for whatever reason. The volunteers put a collar to protect him so that Remy was not considered a feral dog.
The volunteers tried to find the dog a home in the village, but nobody wanted to adopt him. So, Remy was taken to the "Howl of a Dog" shelter. He now had a safe place, a warm bed, toys, and friends. Remy was adopted recently by a beautiful family in Charlotte, North Carolina.
