‘The Carol Burnett Show’ delivers big laughs in a skit that may be considered the first online dating service from Season 7, Episode 7. Carol sets up a table, and she’s all dressed up when her doorbell rings.
She walks over to the door nervously and sees her date with flowers, played by Jack Weston. He asks, “Are you, Ms. Benson?” Carol responds with a smile, and they share an awkward giggle before she welcomes Jack in.
She says he can sit, and they both awkwardly sit on opposite ends of the couch. Carol explains how her friend introduced this new way of dating to her, and it is Jack and Carol’s first attempt at this dating style.
Carol says, “Would you care to listen to some records?” Jack stares at her in shock and says, “No, it gives me vertigo.” They both think it’s weird that the computer missed that fact. They ask each other about their hobbies, like skydiving and swimming, and they both hate what the other enjoys.
Then, Carol randomly spits out a fact about how the most popular surname in the world is the Chinese name “Chang.” Jack’s face lights up, and he moves closer to her and asks, “Really?”
Jack gives her the flowers and spits out a fact about fossils. They both breathe heavily, walk over to the table, and pop open champagne. Jack tells her a fact about how far the longest champagne cork flew. Carol starts to fan herself, and they both giggle and drink excitedly, slamming the cups on the floor. Jack asks her to marry him, but Carol becomes sad and recounts a fact regarding a man who had 22 divorces. Carol asks Jack to leave.
She apologizes to him for not being able to have dinner. Jack shares a fact about how the most baked beans were eaten one by one. Carol slides up against him, fighting the urge to kiss him. When Carol finally gets Jack out, she says, “The oldest living virgin is Sheila Levine of New York City, age 108. I think I’m going to beat her record!”
