Angela Lansbury was born on October 16, 1925, in London, but she moved to New York City when she was only fifteen years old. She immediately started studying acting and moved to Hollywood in 1942.
MGM instantly hired her, and her very first roles earned her two Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Award! In 1952, she ended her contract with MGM and began focusing more on theatrical roles.
However, over the next decade, Lansbury would continue to succeed in film and on stage. In 1962, her role in The Manchurian Candidate led to her third Academy Award nomination and solidified her standing as a famous and fantastic actress.
Meanwhile, in 1966, her leading role in Mame on Broadway earned her first Tony Award and established her as a gay icon. Her success in the theater continued with her leading roles in the musicals Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and The King and I.
Lansbury also gained a significant amount of attention for her Disney movies, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast.
She flawlessly segued into television in the hit detective series Murder She Wrote, which was one of the most popular shows on television that ran for twelve incredible seasons from 1984-1996.
